Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265.
He actively participated in the political life of the city from 1301, due to the conflicts between Guelphs and Ghibellines, he was sentenced to two years of exile. In 1307 he began the fundamental work of his life, the Divine Comedy, a grandiose poem that describes Dante’s journey through the realms of the afterlife under the guidance first of Virgil, then of Beatrice and finally of Saint Bernard.
